The standard time for any particular task is derived through work measurement and time study techniques, and takes into account relaxation allowances, which allow employees time to recover from the psychological or physiological effects of performing a task, and contingency allowances, which recognize that there may be legitimate causes of delay before a task can be completed. Predetermined motion-time systems may be used to help determine a standard time. -

Methods-time measurement was developed in the 1940s and is the most widely used of predetermined motion-time systems of work measurement designed to increase efficiency and consistency in work operations. Work operations are broken down into a set of basic motions such as reach, grasp, position, and release and standard times for each motion are calculated by analyzing films of industrial operations. Simplified versions of the system called MTM2 and MTM3, approved in 1965 and 1970 respectively, use combinations of the basic motions, such as get and put.Abbr. MTM -

The time required for each is established and an assessment of relaxation and contingency allowances is made. Work measurement forms part of work study and is normally conducted subsequent to method study with the aim of increasing efficiency and productivity. Work measurement was developed in the context of industrial production management but has recently become more widely used. Time study and predetermined motion-time systems are used in work measurement. -
